Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This PhD seminar is open to all doctoral candidates with projects focused on any aspect of North American studies, including transnational and hemispheric approaches (e.g. in English and American studies, comparative literature, theater-, film- and media studies, anthropology, German Studies, Romance Studies, African Studies, etc.). The course offers PhD candidates in these fields the opportunity to present their projects and receive in-depth peer feedback, allowing ample time for discussion and suggestions. It also includes a couple of guest lectures to facilitate national and international networking within these fields also beyond the borders of the University of Vienna.
A number of sessions will tackle the process of designing and writing a dissertation and be devoted to supporting students in their individual needs and problems.

Course aims: students will be able to situate their projects within wider research contexts related to North America; you will have deepened and broadened your theoretical understanding, research design and oral presentation skills, and your research networks, within and across various fields; you will have received ample support and techniques regarding "soft skills" to tackle potential obstacles and problems that might occur during the process of writing your dissertation.
