Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course provides an introduction to the currently most important quantitative research methods in linguistics. It gives an introduction to descriptive as well as inferential statistics: normalization, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, probability distributions, statistical tests, significance, effect sizes. For computational applications we will use R.No previous knowledge in statistical computing is required.
Assessment and permitted materials
readings, class participation, assignments, final tasks
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This course aims- to develop an awareness of the specific research methods necessary for investigating students' own research questions (especially their MA theses)- to provide hands-on experience with different quantitative methods- to develop the ability to interprete statistical analyses- to develop the ability to conduct basic statistical tests for a range of different quantitative research questions
Examination topics
Reading, group-work, discussions, theory-inputs, hands-on exercises in the PC-Lab
Reading list
Required and recommended readings will be announced in class.
