Aims, contents and method of the course
The course Language for Specific Purposes and Terminology offers the student knowledge and insight into this kind of communication, its characteristics and structure in Dutch. The course focuses on the theory and practical use of terminological databases. An overview of existing terminological sources will help the student in his or her working with language for specific purposes.
Assessment and permitted materials
The student is evaluated based on the writing exercises during the course and on a final exam, where he or she has to prove his or her theoretical knowledge of terminology and language for specific purposes.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The student learns to process and analyze the often complicated syntactical structure of texts for specific purposes. Based on international terminological norms, the student gains insight into the process of defining terms, the relations between them and the structure of term databases.
Examination topics
Analyzing and interpreting texts for specific purposes, rewriting them, comparing terms in specific fields (law, public service), analyzing the structure of concept systems, exercises in writing these texts.
