Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course Multilingualism, Identity and Interculturality in a Globalising World offers the student insight into recent theories about the relationship between multilingual practices in spoken and written language and how they relate to identity construction, both of at the individual and at the group level. The extent to which multilingualism is used as a resource to deconstruct linguistic and social boundaries is the central focus of this course.

Assessment and permitted materials

The student is evaluated based on one paper, a short presentation and on a final exam, where he or she has to prove his or her ability to critically evaluate theories and concepts.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The student learns how to uncover underlying ideologies in spoken and written discourse and gains insight into the most important theories on the relationship between language, identity and community as well as into the various methodological perspectives (e.g. ethnographic research, discourse analysis, survey research).

Examination topics

Analyzing and interpreting spoken and written discourse starting from a clearly defined research question. Reading and comparing various theoretical articles.
