Aims, contents and method of the course

Lectures 1 & 2: Linguistic situation in Ingria. A brief history of Finnic population in Ingria. The language policy of the Soviet Union/Russia. The overview of research on Finnic languages of Ingria.
Lectures 3 & 4: Votic language: phonetics and phonology, basic grammar. Text reading.
Lectures 5 & 6: Votic language: grammar, syntax. Text reading.
Lectures 7 & 8: Sociolinguistic situation in Ingria: language contacts, identity, the problem of a dialect continuum. Ingrian language: the overview of phonetics and grammar. Text reading.
Lecture 9: Methodology of field research (focusing on work with a nearly extinct language).
Lecture10: Exam: analysis of a simple Votic text.

Examination topics

The course gives the overview of the minor Finnic languages of Ingria: Votic, Ingrian and Ingrian dialect of Finnish. It includes analysis of both the sociolinguistic situation and phonetics/grammar structure of the languages (with some emphasis on the Votic language). The most important aspects of field research in Ingria will be discussed in the course.
