Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
These lectures offers enrichment in Afrikaans grammar and communicative Afrikaans as well as a survey of the development of the Afrikaans language and literature. The different groups living in South Africa and their traditions will be discussed. Several literary genres, such as oral traditions, poetry, novels and films will be addressed and various cultural facets of South Africa are highlighted.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exercises and adjudication during the semester. Oral and/or written examination on theoretical aspects of the language, culture and literature. Preparation of written essay(s) and/or presentation of a oral paper on a selected topic.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Extension of communicative and reading abilities in Afrikaans. Exercises in grammar with a view to the development of translation skills. Extension of insights in the regions cultural heritage as well as an investigation of social, political and economical circumstances and consequences.
Examination topics
The language of tuition is Afrikaans. Introductory lectures in conjunction with exercises in which students exercise, repeat, comment upon and discuss the contents. An e-learning programme provides extra information and exercises.

Books:
1. A prescribed book is required. This is distributed at the start of the semester.
2. The use of an Afrikaans-German/Dutch/English dictionary is recommended.
3. The teaching is supported by e-learning in Moodle. Please register for Taalreis I and II in Moodle. You will recieve more information about it during the first lecture.
