Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
These lectures provide an overview of the development of Afrikaans language, culture and literature in a South African context. The historical developments as well as the traditions of different population groups living in the country are highlighted. Several literary genres, such as oral traditions, poetry and prose will be addressed. Movies receive special attention in the course where the influence of culture on this art form is investigated.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exercises and adjudication during the semester. Oral and/or written examination on theoretical aspects of language, culture and literature. Written essay(s) and/or presentation of a oral paper/project on a selected topic. If you have Afrikaans skills, you can improve your translation skills with exercises.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students should be orientated in the cultural heritage of South Africa and the consequences of the social, political and economic conditions of the country. A working knowledge of the development of Afrikaans language and literature is required. Marks are given for assignments, participation in class and possible projects.
