Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course offers an introduction to sociolinguistics by focusing on the role of language in society and how society affects language. The main aim is to uncover processes of language variation and change, more specifically to look at the social factors that cause variation. Both synchronic and diachronic studies will be presented and discussed.
Assessment and permitted materials
The student is evaluated based on: the article summary, the presentation and the final exam in which he or she has to demonstrated that s/he understood the major sociolinguistic theories and concepts.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students understand the mechanisms behind language variation and change and are aware of the major contributions of sociolinguistic research to the social sciences in general.
Examination topics
Analyse and compare major sociolinguistic concepts and theories. The student summarizes and critically evaluates one article. He or she gives a short presentation about the article after which it is discussed in group.
