Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lectures consists of an introduction to Afrikaans, grammar and literature as well as a cultural studies of South Africa. Lectures, serving as an overview, not only addresses practical facts, but they also allow students to do exercises and to read Afrikaans texts.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final mark will be a combination of attendance, coursework as well as written and oral examinations. Exams at the end of each semester may be taken in Afrikaans, German or Dutch.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To introduce beginners without prior knowledge of Afrikaans to the world's youngest Germanic language and literature, to develop basic translation skills and to present an orientation to the regional and cultural environments of South Africa. Tuition language is Afrikaans (in the initial phases with concise summaries in German).

Examination topics

The opening formal lectures formally address grammar issues and are meant to assist German speaking students and/or those with knowledge of Dutch in reading and speaking Afrikaans. Interactive exercises (often combined with cultural facets) provide the opportunity to actively practice the newly acquired knowledge and to develop a basic vocabulary.

Reading list

Ein vorgeschriebenes Arbeitsbuch ist Pflichtlektüre. Die Verwendung eines Afrikaans-Deutschen Wörterbuches wird empfohlen. Wenn ein eigenes Wörterbuch gewünscht wird, ist dieses so bald wie möglich bei der verantwortlicher Leiter zu bestellen.
The reading of a course workbook is compulsory. It is recommended to use an Afrikaans-German dictionary. If personal dictionaries are desired, these should be ordered from the course convener as soon as possible.
