Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course focuses on different aspects of second language acquisition. Both psychological and neurocognitive aspects will be discussed. Several models of SLA will be presented and critically evaluated. The focus of the course is on the acquisition of Dutch as a second language, but the theories and empirical findings that are presentated cover a broad range of 'second languages'. Finally the way in which success in SLA can be measured will also be discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

The student is evaluated based on one paper, a presentation and on a final exam, where he or she has to prove his or her ability to critically evaluate theories and concepts.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The goal of this course is to address a number of the most important psychological and neurocognitive theories on SLA and how they relate to language learning in formal and informal contexts. Also the link with language educational programmes will be discussed, mainly by referring to specific examples from Dutch-language schools.

Examination topics

Reading and comparing theoretical articles. Analysing didactical material and comparing it for specific teaching/learning purposes. Analysing evaluation material.
