Aims, contents and method of the course

Questions of Estonian from the perspective of linguistic typology: How different/similar is Estonian, in comparison with other languages of Europe and Eurasia, or with other Finno-Ugric languages? Is it possible to measure the differences between Estonian and other languages or predict the learnability of Estonian for speakers of different languages? What kind of data bases could be used to find answers for these questions?

Assessment and permitted materials

Essay or portfolio based on the contents of the lectures and on individual reflection, to be evaluated by Prof. Laakso.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Insights into the methods of linguistic typology and the newest approaches to the study of the Estonian language.

Examination topics

The lectures will be held in Hungary (Budapest/Szeged) by Prof. Dr. Helle Metslang (Tartu) and Dr. Anne Tamm (Tallinn) and transmitted by video conference. For technical reasons, the number of participants is restricted to 10; prospective participants must contact Prof. Laakso by 1 April, and in case of less than three participants, the course will be cancelled.
