Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course we will examine language contact and language change, especially as regards Uralic/Finno-Ugric languages, through various lenses. We will always remember that there is no such thing as abstract “language contact”, but only contact between speakers of different languages and contact between different languages in the mind of human beings.
Over the course of the semester, we will examine the historical context in which language change occurred in the Uralic languages and how a connection can be made between the historical processes on the one hand and the structural changes in the languages concerned on the other. We will analyse how common or unusual language change observed in Uralic languages is, especially in light of findings from language typology.
