Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will compare the grammar of German with that of the Finno-Ugric/Uralic languages ​​(Hungarian, Finnish, Estonian, etc.). The (lack of) universality of the categories is discussed through the lens of contrastive grammar: how much overlap and discrepancy is there between the mechanisms that genealogically unrelated languages ​​use to express similar matters?

The topics covered in the seminar will be determined at the beginning of the semester. Possible topics include:

* German from a language typological point of view
* "Standard Average European": German in the core, Finno-Ugric languages ​​on the periphery
* Typological classifications of languages
* The bias of reference languages ​​in (early and modern) grammars
* Case systems
* Number (incl. dual)
* Definiteness and articles
* Object marking
* Verbal categories (tense, aspect, mood, evidentiality) and their relationship with each other
* The relationship of definiteness ~ differential object marking ~ aspect
* Possessive constructions
* Benefactive, malefactive, ethical dative
* Word order
* Separable verbal prefixes and particle verbs
* Subordination: finite and non-finite, participle constructions vs. relative pronouns
* Congruence (including subject and object congruence)
* Valence
* Gender

Students can and should communicate their own topics and interests in the first units of the seminar.

Assessment and permitted materials

At the beginning of the semester, students should agree on a topic with the teachers. They should give a presentation about it during the seminar and hand in a seminar paper at the end of the semester. This should be around 25 A4 pages in length;deviations from this guideline should be discussed with the teachers.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course is continuously assessed. The final grade will consist of the following components:

- Active participation in discussions, contributions during the semester, presentation: 40%

- written term paper: 60%

Examination topics

The topic of the seminar paper should be discussed with the teachers at the beginning of the semester.
