Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Even today, the forms, narrative modes and content of modernist texts (c. 1890–1930) present a certain challenge for readers and scholars of literature. These are texts that prioritize processes, textures and motifs over plot and action. Characters appear fragmented or in the form of a stream of consciousness; mythological elements are incorporated; perspectives will change abruptly and without warning. The proseminar will show *how* narrative modernist texts work and introduces students to various approaches to this kind of literature. A major focus will be on narratology.
Starting with excerpts from various texts (novels, stories), and including the analysis of a longer example - one of the parts of Dorothy Richardson's "Pilgrimage"-cycle, the participants will be introduced to a number of strategies for how to deal with modernist texts. In addition, these strategies can also help with other, different traditions of narrative literature.

Assessment and permitted materials

Die Gesamtnote besteht aus
A) Mitarbeit (regelmäßige aktive Teilnahme, vorbereitende Lektüre der behandelten Texte, selbständige Diskussionsbeiträge)
B) Gruppenarbeit zur Textvorbereitung während des Semesters und gemeinsame Moderation einer Seminareinheit
C) Erstellen eines Ergebnisprotokolls zu einer Einheit
D) einer selbständig verfassten schriftlichen Abschlussarbeit (ca. 6 Seiten); Abgabe bis 31.8.2025

- für einen positiven Abschluss müssen alle Teilleistungen erbracht werden
- KI-Tools (ChatGPT etc.) sind als Hilfsmittel nicht gestattet
