Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The first goal of this course is to equip the students with the necessary analytical 'tools' to be able to consciously 'read' and understand the imagery of films and comics. After an overview of the history of film and comics, an introduction to the basic problems of so-called "sequential art" or the semiotics of film and comics is given.
In this Konversatorium we will mainly deal with films and comics that have literary originals. The second goal is the comparative analysis of the original, i.e. the literary work, and its film adaption or conversion into a comic strip.
After an introduction to the basic problems of sequential art using a series of analysis examples, students will give presentations on the results of their analysis work.
The objectives of the course can be summarized as follows:
a) Introduction to the history of sequential art (film, comics, graphic novel).
b) Introduction to the basic problems of the language of film and comics using examples
c) Comparative analysis of the literary work, and its adaptations into films/comics.
