Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar is an introduction to the Neo-Assyrian Empire (c. 1000-610 BCE, modern-day Iraq), combining historical background and readings from a selection of primary sources in Akkadian.

Assessment and permitted materials

Preparation of primary texts, reading of secondary literature, and an oral presentation. For students completing their BA within this course and MA students, a thesis or seminar paper is required.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In order to receive a passing grade for this course, students are expected to: participate actively in primary text reading and discussions; give an oral presentation (c. 15-20 minutes) on a given topic; write a final paper (BA only). Participation is mandatory and students are allowed three absences. All requirements must be completed in accordance with best scientific practices and the instructor’s directions.

The evaluation criteria are as follows (non-BA):
Preparation of texts (transliteration, translation, grammatical analysis) and secondary reading: 50%
Attendance and participation in class discussion: 30%
Presentation: 20%

For the BA and for MA students, the evaluation criteria are as follows:
Attendance and participation, including preparation of texts and readings: 30%
Presentation: 20%
Thesis/seminar paper: 50%

Examination topics

Active participation in class and short presentations.

Reading list

Readings will be provided on Moodle, there is no required reading for the first day.
