Aims, contents and method of the course

Reading of classical Arabic and Islamic texts with a focus on Sufi reflections; Introduction to scientific tools for Islamic studies and Arab philology (Qur'an translations, concordances, grammar books, dictionaries, etc.); selected topics (approaches to the Qur'an; structure of classical Arab names, eulogies, etc.)

Assessment and permitted materials

Presence (3 times of absence will be tolerated), active participation (home exercises, translating, preparing of literature, short presentations), final paper (due 15th of September 2018)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To get a positive grade, active participation and the writing of the final paper in time and according to the scientific rules are expected. The paper should be discussed against the background of scientific literature.
Criteria for grading: Participation/exercises during the semester 40%, Paper 60%

Examination topics

No test anticipated. (grading see above)
