Aims, contents and method of the course

In this advanced seminar course, participants will be given the opportunity to explore in-depth a particular syntactic/grammatical construction or a group of constructions from various theoretical perspectives. African language data and African linguists have contributed a lot to the development of contemporary linguistic theory. Students familiar with any one contemporary linguistic theory, like LFG or minimalism, will examine in-depth how the particular construction is handled in that theory; those not familiar with any linguistic theory have to learn one anew and then use it to analyze the construction in question.

Examination topics

Method: Seminar presentations by course participants towards writing a term paper of up to 44000 characters.

Reading list

Texts: A selection of readings of articles on serial verbs and complex predicates in African languages published in top linguistics journals like Linguistic Inquiry, Natural Language and Linguistic Theory, Lingua, and Studies in African Linguistics.
