Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course seeks to introduce students to the geographical and cultural study of Yemen from antiquity to the present. The topics treated in this course include relations between nomadic pastoralists and sedentary folk, the role of non-Muslims (especially Jews) in society, foreign communities, attitudes to trade and labor, and popular religion.

The grading system is as follows:
5) 0-52: not enough (failure)
4) 53-65: enough
3) 66-77: satisfactory
2) 78-90: good
1) 91-100: very good

Examination topics
At the end of the semester each student will give a presentation in class and will write a paper. Each presentation will last 15 minutes and will be followed by a 5-minute period for questions. The paper should be 10-15 pages, including bibliography.
Reading list
The readings for this course will include articles about ethnography, archaeology, and socio-cultural history. An article about a relevant theme will be uploaded to Moodle every week.
