Aims, contents and method of the course

Participants in this seminar critically examine genres of Buddhist rebirth narratives in written and visual media. The aim is to understand the composition, transmission, transformation, and reception of stories of previous births of the Buddha and other figures. Using text critical methodologies as well as iconological and iconographic approaches to narrative imagery, thematic topics to be addressed include macro-historical understandings of the past through narratives, karmic eschatologies of rebirth narratives, hagiographies across births, polemic contestations, gender issues, and political and social paradigms as reflected in narrative texts and imagery.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment: 50% participation (including presentations) / 50% independent paper on the transmission of a particular rebirth narrative between genres and media
