Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
How did principles of international engagement in fragile situations evolve? Are there lessons learnt and a global consensus to be detected? Or did we already enter in a post-hegemonic culture of intervention? We look at Afghanistan, Libya, Kosovo or South Sudan. The nexus between security and development bridges inter-disciplinary gaps and brings about willingness to reform within the international community.
Assessment and permitted materials
Interventions and contributions to topics presented, seminar paper, participation in case-simulations
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Treatment of fragile situations from different lenses, with a view to foreign policy and developmental considerations, security-related issues and principles of international law.Independent assessment of international peace operations regarding peacekeeping, peacebuilding and statebuilding components.
Examination topics
Interactive discussion, presentations/ppts, writing papers, review of articles, special guest lectures (practitioners), case studies in form of simulations in smaller groups (negotiations, meetings), completion of a seminar reader
