Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

• Ottoman literary and historical sources are read in the Arabic script and evaluated.
• Readings include printed and handwritten texts.
• The goal of the seminar is to develop skills in the reading of Ottoman sources in the Arabic script and in their scholarly evaluation.

Assessment and permitted materials

• Preparation of assigned texts and active participation in class.
• The employment of a dictionary (Ottoman-Turkish/German/English) is allowed and required.
Knowledge of English required.

• 1 presentation.
• 1 seminar paper (ca. 20 pages; deadline 31.03.2018), followed by an oral discussion at the lecturer’s discretion.

• Three absences allowed (including illness, travel abroad, etc.).
• Unprepared equals absent.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

• This seminar requires advanced modern Turkish skills.
• This is a PI (prüfungsimmanent) seminar.

• Participation: 25%
• Presentation: 20%
• Seminar paper: 55%
• A minimum of 60% is required to pass.
• Active participation is a minimal criterion.

Examination topics

Ottoman sources in the Arabic script.
Scholarly secondary literature.

Reading list

Bibliography will be established collectively in class.
