Aims, contents and method of the course

This one-semester postgraduate seminar course is devoted to methodological issues in African Studies research encompassing the fields of linguistics, literature, history and social science approaches.
In the course we will deal with the following issues: how to gather data in the form of documents, interviews, questionnaires and observation protocols, how to organize and analysis it and how to present it in the text. Further, we will deal with the ethical dimension of doing research in an African Studies context.
Class interaction will be in the form of lectures, discussion of texts to be read before class, student presentations and computer-based electronic communications.
The course will be partly “blocked” – more detailed information on the schedule will be given in the first unit.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment consists of two parts:
In order to complete the first part taught by Prof. Bodomo, students will be required to submit a paper on methodological issues pertinent to the student’s field of study and to present it in class. (50% of total mark)
In order to complete the second part taught by Ass.-Prof. Englert, students will be required to compile an interview guideline on a topic of their choice, to conduct at least one interview, to transcribe and to analyse it. All these steps will be discussed in class during preparation and after they have been carried out. (50% of total mark)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Presentation of a concept paper in class: 20 %
Essay of about 10 pages: 30 %
Interview guideline: 10%
Interview transcript: 20%
Interview analysis: 20%
