Aus der Abwesenheit schriftlicher Quellen über seine Schwerpunktregion, den Großraum Zentralafrikas, in der andere nichts als eine Not sahen, machte Vansina eine Tugend: Feldforschung, Datenerhebung, Interview und Gespräch wurden ihm schon früh zu unerläßlichen Werkzeugen historischer Forschungspraxis.
Als die Beschäftigung mit vorkolonialer Geschichte Afrikas seit den 1970er und 80er Jahren zunehmend außer Mode geriet, blieb Vansina derselben treu. Gerade weil er den Kolonialismus als einen historisch radikalen Bruch von großer Tiefenwirkung ansah, hielt er die Erforschung früherer Kontinuitäten in der afrikanischen Geschichte für umso dringlicher.Schon aus dieser kurzen Einschätzung Vansinas sollte deutlich ersichtlich sein, dass vielfache Möglichkeiten bestehen, ausgehend von Vansinas Leben und Werk Aspekte der vorkolonialen Geschichte Afrikas zu thematisieren. Die KursteilnehmerInnen sind angehalten, sich auf den einen oder anderen Aspekt zu fokussieren und im Lauf des Semesters eine eigene kleine schriftliche Arbeit darüber zu entwickeln.
