Aims, contents and method of the course

The course aims at the acquisition of a basic knowledge of Moroccan Arabic grammatical structures and the (historical) development of Moroccan Arabic. This includes learning a system for transcribing Moroccan Arabic, the verbal system, simple syntactical structures, vocabulary for daily use and general facts about the state and history of Moroccan Arabic.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be a written exam by the end of the term (Jan. /Feb. 2012). The following parts will definitely be part of the exam (some more might be added): verbal conjugations, word analysis, translation Moroccan – German, translation German – Moroccan, short text composition or fill in the gaps text, vocabulary test (esp.: colors, numbers and the vocabulary from the textbook). In order to pass the course you have to answer at least fifty percent of the questions correctly.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Verbal system: perfect tense, imperfect tense, durative tense, future tense, verb inflection;
Nominal system: determination, plural derivation, adjective derivation, numbers and numerals, color adjectives, congruency, personal pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, deictic forms, adverbs;
Syntax: nominal sentence, verbal sentence, negation, interrogatory sentences;
Lexicon: greetings, shopping, foodstuff, travelling, times and dates, money and measures, giving directions, etc.

Examination topics

The course will be structured in the way Harrell’s ‘A basic course in Moroccan Arabic’ is build up, additional material includes, grammatical sketches, vocabulary and bibliographical information.

Textbook readily available an several copies in stock at the Facultas bookstore (Campus Hof 1).
