Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is designed to probe the multiple perspectives on post-independent African wars and conflicts captured in selected 21st Century African narratives, autobiographies/biographies, documentaries, and fictional films. While chosen works have an African focus, creators of such works are both African and non-African. The study of texts will require an engagement with the nexus of factors, fetishism of violence, actors, psycho-social effects, and national reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts thematized in these works.

Assessment and permitted materials

Production of a well-articulated paper at the end of the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students will:
i. unearth and analyze the political, philosophical, economic, psychological, sociological, and gender dimensions to wars in post-colonial Africa
ii. use their knowledge and background in diverse disciplinary areas to enhance the level of discourse and discussion
iii. decode and interpret the images of war and conflict in the primary texts
iv. compare and contrast images of war and conflict using variables such as genre, temporal distance, level of mimesis (documentary, fiction, faction) of text, gender and nationality of creator as well as the conflict’s duration and actors
v. produce a well-articulated paper at the end of the course
