Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar focuses on the early period of Kalam (rational Muslim Theology). We will discuss the importance of dialogue and disputation within Kalam, the mutakallimun's social standing and their position at the caliphal court, as well as various theories about the influence of non-Arabic traditions on the development of Kalam.
One main focus will be on the translation, discussion and contextualisation of Arabic texts which will be distributed in the course of the seminar.

Assessment and permitted materials

active participation in the weekly seminar sessions,
reading, presentation, and discussion of the suggested secondary literature,
preparation of translations of the Arabic texts which will be discussed each week,
written essay at the end of the seminar containing the translation, discussion and contextualisation of an assigned Arabic text

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

active participation (45%) and written essay (55%)
The essay has to be written according to good scientific practice
