Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course will introduce the history of modern Iraq, from the late Ottoman period to the present day. The history of political development is complemented by emphases on topics such as the Kurdish question, the role of the Shiite clergy, oil politics and the role of ideology (Baathism, etc.). Special attention is also given to the country's post-2003 development including the upcoming reform of the security sector. Students should thus be able to understand the socio-political development of Iraq and be able to interpret the present expertly.

written exam appr. 20 questions

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

presence(!), active engagement in repeats, 50% of correctly answered questions suffice for passing the written exam
