Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to present an overview of the history of the Arabic-Islamic World from Late Antiquity until the Ottoman takeover. Particular attention will be paid to sources based on which this history is reconstructed. The discussed periods are the those of the Prophet Muhammad and the four rightly guided caliphs, the Umayyads, the Abbasids, the Fatimids, the Seljuks, the Mongols and the Mamluks. The regional focus is on the Mediterranean (Iberian Peninsula, North Africa, Levant), Mesopotamia, and the Arabian Peninsula. Questions of power and the organisation of the empire, intellectual history, mobility and art are addressed.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam at the end of the semester.
No resources are allowed.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The exam consists of 5 questions, four of which are general knowledge question (5 points each) and one question that has to be answered in form of an essay (20 points).
