In recent years we see an increasing number of initiatives and projects which use digital methods and techniques in the fields of Middle Eastern Studies. Yet, given the area and period of time covered by the Ottoman Empire, the usage of digital methods faces particular challenges (multitude of scripts, languages, cultural identities, diverse historical periods) that the exercise intends to address.
The exercise will first give an overview of the history of DH in Ottoman Studies and then present and discuss a selection of projects using DH methods. As part of the exercise, students should learn and use DH applications for specific turcological problems.

Assessment and permitted materials

Specific Ottoman studies based problems will be assigned and students will use and present DH applications for these problems.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance (max. 3 times missing) and active participation in the exercise as well as timely completion of the tasks.

Examination topics

Will be provided on Moodle.

Reading list
