Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Overview over the most important Classical Arabic texts on zoology. Reading (as far as presence is possible, due to Covid 19-situation), translation (in case of digital school, exclusively that) and interpretation of relevant Classical Arabic texts originating from different times.

Assessment and permitted materials

Continuous preparation and regular active cooperation (and contributions).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Regular participation, absence at most three times. Regular active cooperation and contributions, concluding test. In case of digital school: transfer of the translation exercises. Relation of test : contributions = 10 : 90.

Examination topics

Concluding test: reading (as far as possible), translation (in case of digital school, exclusively that) and interpretation of specific classical Arabic passages on zoology.

Reading list

European literature on the genre will be dealt with during the sessions.
Texts: especially al-Jahiz, Kitab al-hayawan; ad-Damiri, Kitab hayat al-hayawan; al-Qalqashandi, Kitab subh al-a`sha.
