Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

What is the future of cultural heritage in Central Asia today? Which material objects, buildings, bodies of knowledge, languages or religious rituals are deemed worth to be preserved and remembered, and which ones are not, why, for which purpose, in which form, and who decides these matters? Which pasts are referenced for the construction of cultural identity today? After a review of debates, practices, narratives, and relevant actors and their respective interests in the field of policies of cultural heritage in Central Asia today, we will discuss entanglements of historical objects, material culture, collective identities, as well as politics of remembrance and space. In line with decolonial research on cultural heritage, we will pay specific attention to the question which role museum collections can and should play in the preservation and mainanance of cultural identities, especially if these are endangered by war and persecution.
Learning goals: The students
• Can critically use the term 'cultural heritage', and discuss it in the context of the construction of history, identity politics, and processes of decolonisation;
• Have acquired methodological and theoretical knowledge about how to access the topic cultural heritage and the region Central Asia through museum objects and their biographies.
Practical work with the Central Asia collection at Weltmuseum as well as a planned visit to the Humboldt-Forums in Berlin (3-day excursion) serve as the empirical basis for individual research projects that are processed (in multimedia form) and presented as final paper.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are expected to attend classes regularly (maximum 3 times absence is excused) and actively participate in in-class activities and discussions. Students will present a topic of their choice in the framework of the excursion or in the seminar. Final paper (in text, visual, audio or multi-media form).
Attendance and in-class participation 30%
Presentation 30 %
Final paper/audio/video etc. 40 %
