Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar aims at providing students with an overview of the structure of the Ottoman state and its subjects' relationship to the state. At the same time, Ottoman social and economic history will be addressed.
Weekly reading assignments will be discussed in class. Parallelly, relevant published Ottoman sources (especially Mühimme Defterleri, Şikâyet Defterleri, and Cadi Court registers) will be read and commented.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance, active participation (being absent thrice is tolerated) as well as a seminar paper, which may be submitted in English or German.
