Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims at introducing students to the major periods of the history of South Arabia (i.e. Yemen and neighboring areas of Saudi Arabia and Oman) from the Bronze Age to early Islam, together with the material culture, society, and religious traditions of South Arabia during this time-fame.

Assessment and permitted materials

At the end of the semester, each student will be required to write a 10-15 page essay on a relevant topic. Students are free to use any materials from the class that may be useful for the purpose, together with any of the items listed in the bibliographies at the end of each power-point. Additional sources may be sought from books and peer-reviewed journals, including online peer-reviewed journals.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

As mentioned above (see "Ziele, Inhalte und Methode"), students should come out of this course with a solid understanding of the major periods of the history of South Arabia from the Bronze Age to early Islam, together with a working knowledge of the material culture, society, and religious traditions of South Arabia during the time-fame covered in the course. Grading will be based on in-class participation and performance in the presentation and final paper.
The grading system is as follows:
5--0-52: not enough (not keeping up with readings, presentation and/or paper unorganized and full of inaccuracies)
4--53-65: enough (reading only when you feel like it, presentation and/or paper somewhat better organized but still has inaccuracies)
3--66-77: satisfactory (keeping up with the readings but without retaining information, presentation and/or paper passable but still not that great)
2--78-90: good (keeping up with the readings, presentation and/or paper could be improved in terms of organization but otherwise okay)
1--91-100: very good (keeping up with the readings, presentation and/or paper has only minor errors, if any)
