Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Pre-modern Arabic texts often narrate stories of heroic warriors, noble rulers or wise scholars. The imaginations of ideal masculinity are contrasted with stories about ascetics, jokers or rough fellows - concepts of masculinity that deviate from the hegemonic norm. In modern texts, on the other hand, these narratives are partly perpetuated, partly replaced or supplemented by new images of "modern masculinity". This lecture will examine the pluralistic concepts of masculinity and their manifestations in literary discourse. Masculinity is not understood as something given, but as construction and performance. Among others, the following aspects will be examined:
- The pre-Islamic concept of muruwwa and its semantic change over time
- The image of the Bedouin between nostalgic imagination of identity and the creation of alterity
- Mirrors for Princes: instructions for the ideal ruler
- Manifestations of refinement: The ẓarīf as an example of urban hegemonic construction of masculinity
- Hero or daredevil: typologies of masculinity in pre-modern Arabic popular literature
- Carnivalesque gender bender in the shadow theater of the Mamluk period
- Constructions of national identity in interaction with narratives of modern masculinity
