Aims, contents and method of the course

Ability to read and analyze modern as well as classical Arabic texts from the field of Islamic law, particularly from fatwa literature. Knowledge of the necessary religious and legal terminology and concepts. Arabic texts from different periods in the history of the Muslim world until the present will be read, translated and analyzed. In this regard Islamic legal opinions will be used as sources for the social and cultural history of the Muslim world.

Preparation of the texts; active participation in the discussion of the texts; B.A. thesis
Corona-Update: Due to the switch to home-learning students' active participation will be assessed on the basis of weekly submitted summaries (incl. reflections) of the assigned texts in the range of approx. 3 pages. Analogous to the obligatory nature of physical presence under normal conditions, these weekly submissions are likewise obligatory. Nevertheless three "absences" (i.e. non-submissions) will be tolerated.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirements for a positive completion of the course are active participation, preparation of the texts (reading, translation and engagement with content) and the writing of a B.A. thesis (including possible reflections) on a selected topic from the field of Islamic law. The B.A. thesis has to be submitted in due time and has to conform to the guidelines of good scientific practice. Physical presence is obligatory (3 absences will be tolerated). Grading will be based on preparation/participation and the B.A. thesis at a 30:70 ratio.
