Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this course is to enable students to read and analyze classical Arabic-Islamic legal texts. An important part of our work will consist in acquiring an understanding of the terms and concepts necessary to navigate through the texts in question. Primary source reading will be supplemented with secondary material in order to better situate the issues in question within the field of contemporary Islamic legal studies.

Assessment and permitted materials

Preparation of weekly readings (translation and reflection); active participation in the discussion of the texts; B.A. thesis. Presence in class is mandatory, three absences will be excused.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirements for a positive assessment are active participation in class, the preparation of weekly readings (translation and preparation for discussion), as well as the writing and submission of a substantial scholarly work on a selected topic from the field of Islamic law, which will constitute the student’s Bachelor's thesis. The BA thesis must be submitted by the deadline and comply with the requirements and rules of good academic practice.
Attendance is compulsory, three absences are permitted.
Assessment standard: class participation and preparation of readings 30%, BA thesis 70%.

Examination topics

Assessment is based on class participation, translation and preparation of weekly readings for discussion and the submission of a BA-thesis. For topics, see course contents.
