Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is the first part of a two-semester introduction to the Maltese language. It focuses on introducing students to the grammar and essential lexicon of Maltese. Students will receive practical as well as theoretical instruction in the language (i.e. a knowledge of basic conversation as well as a knowledge of philological matters like etymology, phonology, etc.). Primary materials in Maltese will include texts in various genres as well as online audio material.

Assessment and permitted materials

50% of a student's final grade for the course is based on performance on the final exam. The remaining 50% is based on homework (25%) and class participation (25%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Here is the grading system that will be used when evaluating students' performance:
1 (91-100%) very good
2 (78-90%) good
3 (66-77%) sufficient
4 (53-65%) passable
5 (0-52%) not enought to pass the course

Examination topics

The final exam will be held on the last day of class (Wednesday 26.01.2022) and will consist of a Maltese text which students are required to translate. The exam is open-book, meaning that students will have full access to dictionaries, grammars, and any material posted on Moodle, including power-points.

Reading list

Our textbook for this course is Arne Ambros' "Bonġornu, kif int? Einführung in die maltesische Sprache". Students are encouraged to buy this textbook online. Should there be any problems with doing so, PDFs of the book's chapters will be uploaded to Moodle weekly.
