Aims, contents and method of the course

Knowledge of linguistic methods with focus on Arabic. Among the selected topics are: traditional Arabic grammar, historical linguistics (esp. etymology), language contact, edition of manuscripts, lexicology.
Reading of linguistic articles, discussions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation, essay on a selected linguistic topic (deadline 31 March 2021):
Change due to Covid-19 (11 Jan 2021): Instead of the test: Take a linguistic article (own choice) and write a critical review (2-3 pages); this review is to be submitted together with the essay

obsolete: written test at the end of the term or beginning of March.
In case of Covid-19 restrictions the exam will be oral.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

3 absences are tolerated, active participation (20%), essay (30%), test (50%).
Deadline for the essay: 31 March 2021
