Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course covers the administrative documentation from the Ur III period and provides an overview of the different types of texts and archives of the period as well as some of the key areas of research. In class, we will read primary texts and discuss selected secondary literature (partly in the form of short presentations). Seminar papers will be focused on specific, individual topics (e.g., analyzing a small dossier in terms of content or prosopography). The class will be taught in English.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are required to prepare ahead of time to be able to read and actively discuss primary texts in class. Students will also be required to give a short presentation on a relevant topic. If the course is to be credited with 8 ECTS points, students will also be required to write a seminar paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Class participation is mandatory; three classes can be missed. Note that a failure to prepare for class will be counted as an absence.

The final grade will consist of three, independently assessed areas:
(1) participation in text readings in class, adequate preparation for class, and participation in class discussions (60% of final grade);
(2) a short presentation (20%) ; and
(3) a final seminar paper, which also includes a reaction to feedback (20%).

Examination topics

Active participation in class and preparation of the texts (using any and all academic materials such as sign lists, glossaries, etc.); short presentations based on the secondary literature; a final seminar paper written and evaluated in accordance to the rules of good academic practice.
