Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar introduces students to a variety of sources on Ottoman literature: Biographies of poets (tezkire), anthologies and miscellanies (mecmūʿa), architectural inscriptions, etc.
Method:
Instructional work with these primary sources, presentations on research, reading and discussion of them.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course is examination-immanent.
To be achieved: Active work and editing will be practiced on the basis of texts and poems to be selected together. Learning palaeographic peculiarities, correct transcription, determination of verse measures, translations and the like.
The final project will be an independent scholarly edition of several Ottoman poems, which will be selected together in class.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirement for a positive assessment is constant active participation (a maximum of three absences is allowed), giving a presentation and writing the short text edition mentioned above.
