Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture is intended to provide a broad overview of the art and culture of the Tibetan highlands and the Himalayan region from northern India via Nepal to Bhutan.
The spectrum of topics ranges from the beginnings of Buddhism and the construction of important monastic complexes in central Tibet, the second wave of Buddhism in western Tibet, to the artistic activities in Nepal and the eastern Himalayas. The Himalayas as a place of longing for European rope teams, adventure seekers and explorers of the 20th century will also be discussed.
On the basis of selected examples of painting, sculpture, architecture and rituals, we will look at artistic, religious and cultural peculiarities and characteristics of the Himalayan region, as well as their developments from the Middle Ages to the present.
