Aims, contents and method of the course

The main goal of the course is to support students in their work on their Master's theses or doctoral dissertations. Specifically, this includes the following goals:
• to be familiar with recent research contributions in the field of South Asian religion and philosophy
• to be familiar with the various relevant discourses
• to be able to elaborate and present a selected academic topic in a focused, systematic and clearly conceived manner and to establish and justify one's own theses
• to be familiar with the formal aspects of academic work in the field of South Asian studies
• to be able to present research questions and results orally

In terms of content, the course will focus on the subject areas of the participants' theses. For the first meeting, please prepare a short informal presentation (5-10 min) introducing the topic of your thesis, its content structure, and a proposal of what you would like to deal with in the colloquium.

Teaching methods of the course: Joint text reading of primary and, if required, secondary literature, oral presentation of one’s own research results, joint discussion of participants' texts.
The course will be held in English, unless all participants prefer it to be held in German.
Depending on the needs of the students, the course can be held online, in a hybrid format, or in person.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral presentations, submission of a written chapter of the thesis (or a thesis proposal, if the student is at the beginning of her/his work).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Prerequisites for obtaining a positive grade are attendance (three absences are tolerated if compensation tasks are completed), active participation, oral presentations, submission of a written chapter of the thesis (or a thesis proposal, if the student is at the beginning of her/his work).
The grade is based 50% on the oral and 50% on the written contributions.

Examination topics

The oral and written work to be done is thematically closely related to the students' theses.

If necessary, bibliographies and handouts will be provided online in Moodle.
