Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is a deeper understanding of elementary concepts and approaches in the theory and criticism of literatures of Africa and the Diaspora and their application in the discussion and analysis of works of literature. To this end, concepts and debates in the area of literary studies are systematically elaborated: Definitions of literary studies, literary history, and literary theory in general; presentation of a range of the models for textual analysis; Eurocentrism and Afrocentric approaches in literary studies; global perspectives in literary theory and criticism; genres and insights into cultural and literary production in the context of Africa and the Diaspora.
The course proceeds through lecture, group discussions, students' presentations and close readings of literary texts.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in group discussions and exercises during the course and preparatory reading; three written assignments during the semester: exposé of a research article from the course literature (2-3 pages); 2 written assignments on literary texts (2-3 pages each)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

All three written assignments must be completed. Regular course attendance (a maximum of 4 missed sessions is allowed). Much of the course reading is in English, teaching language is German. Knowledge of German and English is required.
Written assignments count for 75%, active participation during the semester for 25% of the grade.
