We will begin screening and discussing the films you created during the 8th and 9th sessions (on January 7, 2025). Each of you will receive ballots for all the films. Please rate the films based on their content, technical aspects, and other criteria on a scale of 1 to 10. Voting will be anonymous.This means that all film productions should be completed before the 8th session. During the 10th session (on January 21, 2025), we will hold the closing ceremony and awards presentation for our film festival. Based on the preliminary results, a selection of films will be screened in class, and our invited judges will present awards for first, second, and third place. All of this will be completed during the 10th session.Please share your thoughts and opinions. Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
In the first three sessions, three films will be analyzed and discussed: *My Chronicle of the Cultural Revolution* and *Summary of Crimes* (both by Xu Xing), and *Harvest* by Xu Tong. Students are required to complete the viewing of these films before the start of the course.From the fourth session (fourth week) onward, students will be assigned a project, requiring them to complete their own independently produced short film by the tenth session (tenth week). If the class size is large, students can be divided into groups to collaborate on the production. The topic will be decided through discussion with students, and basic requirements will be provided. The aim of the course is to introduce students to independent film production across different periods in China, to view and discuss Chinese independent films, and to help students gain an understanding of the artistic value, as well as the cultural, social, and economic attributes of these films. By doing so, students will deepen their understanding of China. The course will also teach filmmaking techniques, and students will work together to create short films, stimulating their imagination and creativity. After twelve sessions, students will acquire basic knowledge and skills in independent film production.
Teaching Methods
The course will include the introduction and viewing of films, with students being required to watch them independently outside of class. In class, students will bring up questions that arose during their viewing, which will be discussed and answered.
