Before and during World War II, appr. 18000 jewish refugees from Europe fled to Shanghai and remained there until the end of the war. Their living conditions were complicated and difficult, not least because - apart from being confined to a certain area - the city was already full of Chinese immigrants and refugees from other parts of China.During the autumn of 2020, two exhibitions in Austria deal with certain aspects of the European exile in Shanghai: "Scenes of Exile" in Salzburg and "Little Vienna in Shanghai" at the Jewish Museum Vienna.Shanghai as a "memory space", as defined in Cultural Memory theories - the focus of this class lies on selected texts in literature and film dealing with the exile in Shanghai. These texts include newspaper articles, novels, momoirs as well as feature and documentary films. We will discuss questions of genre as well as the specirfic role of institutions and international relations in these memory processes.
