Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exam.Grading will be based on a final examination (in the form of a multiple-choice test (in German language)). No auxiliary aids are allowed during the exam.For further details on exam modalities and preparations, please refer to the moodle platform.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
To pass the written final exam with a positive grade, a score of over 50% is required.Additional information regarding the exam can be found on the moodle platform.Grading scale: sehr gut (90-100%), gut (75-89%), befriedigend (61-74%), genügend (51-60%), nicht genügend (≤50%).
Examination topics
The lecture material and accompanying information can be found on the e-learning platform (moodle). The lecture series is conducted in German language; several articles on the reading list are in English.The final grade is based on a written exam that covers the contents of the lectures and resources on the e-learning platform.

The aim of this lecture series is to provide sound knowledge of Japan’s politics and economics, as well as a basic understanding of contemporary history, enabling students to independently assess current developments in Japan and beyond. The lecture series intends to nurture interest so as to encourage self-study to further deepen knowledge.—METHODS—
Lectures (supported by materials on the e-learning platform moodle).For the 2024 lecture series, as in the period before the COVID pandemic, on-site lectures are planned (lecture room C2, Wednesdays at 18:45). In case of unexpected scheduling issues, it is possible that individual lecture units will be held as webinars / live streaming via Zoom or as asynchronous video recordings.The exact dates of the lectures will be as announced on moodle.The teaching language is German. Japanese language skills are not required.Please refer to the German version of this page or to the moodle e-learning platform for further details.
