Aims, contents and method of the course

Achtung: Diese Veranstaltung wird in Englisch unterrichtet. THIS CLASS IS TAUGHT IN ENGLISH.

Content:
The course addresses selected issues surrounding regional inequality in contemporary Japan.

Goals:
1. To develop and deepen the understanding of a complex socio-economic phenomenon from various perspectives
2. To develop insights in the different theoretical and methodological approaches to study the selected topic(s)
3. To enhance critical and constructive text-based discussion skills
4. To improve oral and written communication skills in English

Methods:
Group discussions, oral presentations, group work (including role play, small research tasks).

Assessment and permitted materials

- Oral presentation (individual or in small group)
- Two literature reports on selected readings (1-2 pp each, to be submitted in the FIRST session)
- Active engagement in discussions
- Paper (12-15 pages)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements:
Presence in the UE, paper, oral presentation (or a similar task, decided upon consultation with the lecturer), two literature reports

A total of 100 points can be reached:
- Paper: 30 points
- Literature reports: 20 points (10 points each)
- Oral presentation: 20 points
- Active engagement: 30 points
