Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will be about studying and getting an understanding on the origins and trajectories of the Korean diaspora. Since the 19th century, historical and political changes dispersed many Koreans from the peninsula in search for better lives. With the formations of two separate Korean states on the peninsula, their sense of being a diaspora in their host country became ambiguous. In this class we will be looking at how they form their identity, and how culture is often the way through which they express their identity and their place in the world.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
● Learn about the various Korean diaspora communities that have formed since the 19th Century and have by know spread out across the globe.
● Be able to discuss the various concepts related to their political identity such as the concept of diaspora, migrant, transnationalism, etc.
● Explore the variety of possibilities in identity formation of the diaspora and how these are often expressed through culture.
● Build skills in planning, developing, and writing about the topic of the Korean diaspora.
● Be able to critically discuss the concept of diaspora and its relation to Korea and Koreans.

Assessment and permitted materials

? Attendance & In-Class Participation (10 Points)
You are required to prepare all assigned Required Reading and materials for scheduled
class discussions and practicums. You are also expected to actively participate in all class discussions, ask intelligent questions, and offer substantive and informed comments on any of your colleagues’ in-class presentations. You will be graded on your performance during the hands-on sessions and practicums.

? Presentations (40 Points)
You are expected to present one of the readings that appear in this syllabus and highlight
the main arguments that are discussed. Also include questions that you posed to the text(s) while preparing that were not clear to you or that you would like to discuss further. Enhance your presentation through the use of pictures, short video clips, diagrams, or through other means. Distribute/upload your presentation on the Moodle platform.

? Essay Paper (50 Points)
You are expected to write a final essay of around 2000-2500 words about a topic of your choice that has a relation to the Korean diaspora. The goal is to highlight an issue that is important to the understanding, or in the discussion on Korean diaspora. You can let yourself be guided by the syllabus readings. The submission deadline is set for July 15, 2024.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Mindestanforderungen:
• Proseminararbeit (fristgerechte Abgabe! Die Arbeit muss auf jeden Fall positiv bewertet sein, damit die Lehrveranstaltung insgesamt positiv abgeschlossen werden kann)
• Präsentation
• Anwesenheit

Beurteilungsmaßstab: Proseminararbeit 50 Punkte, Präsentation 40 Punkte, Anwesenheit 10 Punkte

Für eine positive Note sind mindestens 60 Punkte erforderlich.
1 (sehr gut) 100-90 Punkte
2 (gut) 89-81 Punkte
3 (befriedigend) 80-71 Punkte
4 (genügend) 70-60 Punkte
5 (nicht genügend) 59-0 Punkte

Examination topics

Die Lehrveranstaltung wird anhand der oben beschriebenen Kriterien beurteilt.
