Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this course is to give an overview over then basic structure, morphology and phonology of modern Japanese. The history and classification of sinojapanese characters (kanji) are also covered to some extent, as are the history of the Japanese language(s) and etymology of some words and phrases.
Please note that the language used in this course is German (and Japanese); all translations during class and in written tests are to be Japanese->German. A good command of written German is therefore not only beneficial, but essential.

For winter semester 2023/24, this course will be conducted online via Moodle.
Important notice:

This course is intended to be taken together with Japanisch Praxis 1, where grammar and usage patterns explained in this class are repeated and exercised during class and through home work.

Assessment and permitted materials

One written exam at the end of the semester, covering
1. Translations Japanese->German. All Japanese texts in this part of the exam are based on patterns and sentences from the coursebook. No additional vocabulary is required.
2. Kanji-passive: For every kanji in this part of the test, one on-reading, one kun-reading, and alongside either on- or kun-reading the corresponding meaning in German has to be added.
3. Questions regarding etymology and typology of the sinojapanese characters
4. Determination of stroke order, number of strokes, and most sensible candidate for the key radical .
NOTE: You may use a printed dictionary of your first language/German for the exam, but obviously no Japanese or character dictionaries are allowed. Also, digital dictionaries cannot be used (e.g. mobile phones etc.).

The exam will be conducted on site at the University (place and date tba, but likely February 1st/2nd). Please note that you will have to register for this examination seperately via u:space. Enrollment in the Moodle course does *not* mean you are registered automatically for the exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A result of at least 60% is needed to complete this course. Grades are determined as follows:
0-59%: NG | 60-69%: GEN | 70-79%: BEF | 80-89%: GUT | 90%+: SG
It is permitted to use a printed (not digital!) dictionary of any language other than Japanese or Chinese <--> German for the exam. Please take the dictionary to the invigilator for a check before the exam starts.
